All In (poker)
What does All In mean in poker?
All In in poker means that a player puts all of their remaining chips into one hand.
How does All In work?
After this move, the player cannot add any more chips to that hand. If the other players continue betting, a separate part of the pot is created for the all-in player. After that, the result depends on the showdown or on the actions of the remaining players.
When is All In appropriate?
Players usually go all-in when:
the hand is very strong;
the stack has become short;
the player wants to apply maximum pressure;
there is very little room left for cautious play in a tournament.
Is it a good move or a risky one?
It can be both. All In can win the pot immediately or knock an opponent out of the hand. But a mistake is expensive because the whole stack is on the line. That is why all-in is not just a bold move. It has to depend on the situation and the strength of the hand.
