Big Blind (poker)
What does Big Blind mean in poker?
In poker, the Big Blind is a mandatory bet posted before the cards are dealt. It is placed blind, which means the player commits chips before seeing their hand. The Big Blind is usually larger than the Small Blind and serves as the basic reference point for bet sizing at the table.
How does Big Blind work?
The player in the Big Blind position has already put money into the pot before the hand even begins. Because of that, it can sometimes be easier to continue with a marginal hand, since part of the investment is already there. After the flop, though, this position often becomes less comfortable because the player usually has to make decisions out of position against opponents.
Where is it used?
The Big Blind is used in almost all major poker formats:
cash games;
tournaments;
online poker;
live poker.
Is it good or bad?
By itself, the Big Blind is neither good nor bad. It is simply part of the game’s structure. It creates the initial action, builds the starting pot, and affects strategy before the flop. But because chips are already committed, this position often pulls players into close decisions, and that is where its main strategic nuance lies.
